The Emerald Ash BorerMinnesota is blessed with 937 million ash trees; the second most of any state in the nation. However, the newly found presence of the emerald ash borer could change all that.
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive wood boring beetle that is native to Asia. It was first discovered in Canada in 2002 and spread to Detroit, MI in 2003. It is now in Minnesota and right here in Hennepin County. |
The adult beetles are metallic green and are typically one-half to one inch long. Their larvae kill ash trees within one to four years by feeding on the inner bark of the trees and preventing the transportation of nutrients.
According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, an infestation can be identified by 1/8 inch D shaped exit holes in ash tree bark and serpentine tunnels packed with sawdust under the bark. Only certain types of North American ash trees are susceptible to the EAB. Green, Blue, White, Black, Seedless Marshall, Autumn Purple, and Summit are examples of ash trees that are in danger. All the ash trees listed will be killed by the ash borer if they are not properly treated before the borer gets to them.
Bear Tree Care uses a treatment that can prevent the EAB from attacking and killing your trees. The Tree-age insecticide developed by Arborjet is manufactured by Syngenta Corporation.
The Tree-age treatment is a micro infusion injection that goes directly into the trunk of the tree.
Arborjet has been adopted by the cities of Richfield, Cottage Grove, and New Brighton as treatment for up to 5000 trees this season. Eight other cities in Minnesota have committed to approximately 100 trees each. Other major cities such as, Chicago and Milwaukee have also chosen Arborjet’s Tree-age treatment method.
University studies have shown this to be the most effective method and the only product to date that is labeled for multiple year coverage. Based on this information, we offer a guarantee of a two year protection plan if the trees are healthy prior to the treatment being applied. Check out our guarantee under our Services link.
